Evaluation

1. In what ways does your media product, use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Used:

Instruments
The first convention of real media products that we used was the use of instruments during our video. This was because during our research into indie music videos we found that the use of instruments was a major part the genre as it meant that it added a sense of realism to the  videos and audiences were able to see that the artists that they loved were able to actually play the instruments they heard during the music video.
We also decided it was important as we needed to add an aspect of band performance into the video. This is seen in almost every indie artists music video and is a large part of the genre as it again adds to the sense of realism and shows that the band can play their instruments.
This use of instruments can be linked to the Sex Pistols- Holiday In The Sun as they too use there instruments in there video during the band performance scenes.

Lip Sync

The second convention we used was lip syncing. This allowed us to make it seem as if the lead singer was actually singing the song through out the video which furthermore added the sense of realism that indie music audiences desire. It also meant that we could portray the emotions of the lead singer to the audience which further meant that there was a connection between the actors in the music video and the audience. This is linked in with the band Oasis in their video Champagne Supernova, this uses the convention of lip sinking during the scene when he is laying on his bed singing up to the camera as he also tries to connect with the audience in the same way as our lead singer through his facial expressions and lyrics that try to grab the audience and make them connect with the song. We have hopefully recreated this during our video with the use of a few scenes where we have the lead singer singing to the camera and one where he is singing to the female/camera. These sections of the video have helped get the music and video to connect with the audience.

Developed

Narrative

One convention that we have developed is the use of the narrative within our video as we have used comedy within it tom try and further engross the audience into the video. This has been developed as in most videos such as The Clash's- London Calling the narrative of the story is more serious and it does not try to add comedy but make a serious point within the video. In this case the band member is trying to get to his gig before it starts. Whereas in contrast our lead singer whilst trying the serious task of trying to win back his girlfriend makes some mistakes as shown here he falls over the bin. These additions to the usual narrative of music videos helps it stand out and means that hopefully it will attract a new audience to the song.

Camera- extreme close ups

A second convention that we developed was the use of extreme close ups within our video. Extreme close ups are often used in the indie genre as it means that the audience can see closely how the artists is behaving or working their instrument as shown here in the Jungle Giants video I am what you want me to be it flashes through each of the artists as they are playing their instruments. Whereas in our video we had a transparent overlay of our lead singer singing whilst narrative was still going on in the background. This meant that we where able to add another dimension to our video by keeping the audience informed on the narrative whilst keeping to the conventions of the genre and showing an extreme close up of our lead singer singing,

Challenged

Live performance/Narrative

One aspect of media conventions that we challenged was the use of a Live performance during the narrative. This meant that we could add another layer into our music video by  putting the two together we were able to add comedy and romance into the video whilst at the same time keeping the sense of realism by having the band in the background playing the instruments and showing that they are able to play, which is one of the most important aspects of the indie genre. The use of live performance is shown in The Clash's video London Calling where they play on a barge, this also shows how we have developed this convention as it shows the way in which most artists have very separate scenes in which they ether have their band performance or their narrative.

2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

4. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages.

Editing Progress

Today we finished the editing of our music video and have uploaded the final video to youtube. We have sorted out all the issues mentioned before hand and are going to analyse the video by commenting on it using the youtube annotation system.

Editing progress

We have now completed a third draft which is almost finished now all we need to do is increase the brightness during the falling out scenes and sort out some timing.

Editing Progress

Here is the second cut of our music video it is now about 95% complete and only needs a few tweaks such as some more lip sink pieces and  the clip at the beginning when we are walking down the road needs changing as the quality is poor and the lip sink is out. Furthermore the end of the song when the band is playing and their is no singing the lead singer is still singing so this clip also needs to be changed.
